Background: Esthetics play an important role in determining the success of anterior restorations including removable prosthesis and fixed prosthesis. Patients expect a restoration which appears more similar to their original dentition. Hence, it is important to have a basic idea as to what their smile was previously. Aim: This study aims to determine the smile of different ethnic groups which provides a basic interpretation. Materials and Methods: For comparing the amount of tooth and gingival display in relation to different language speaking people in South India, the study was conducted among 80 subjects who spoke different languages (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam). All photographs were taken with a digital single-lens reflex camera and a macro lens with the same shutter speed, aperture, and same distance from the patient. No analysis was made on printed photographs to avoid distortion of data. The photographic data were analyzed using digital photography software (Adobe Photoshop CS3, Adobe Systems Inc.). Results: The results of the ANOVA showed no statistical significance though there were differences between the groups clinically. Conclusion: When examining the whole range of lip-tooth relationship in a smile simply quantifying the photographs is not adequate, a record is required for a dynamic smile analysis. The sample size seems to be a limitation of this study.
