Objective: The aim of this study was to use a cross-sectional epidemiological survey to investigate the prevalence and severity of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) among the dental students of Saveetha Dental College using a simple questionnaire. Methods: The sample consisted of 100 dental undergraduate students from Saveetha Dental College and Hospital, India. Each student was given a study questionnaire proposed by Fonseca and was briefed about the procedure of filling it. The questionnaire contained 13 questions which were related to the signs and symptoms of TMD. The subjects were informed to answer with “yes,” “no,” and “sometimes.” Scores were given, and the value was used to calculate the severity of TMD. Results: The study revealed that, of 100 students, 58 (58%) were observed free of TMD. About 42% of the population had some kind of TMD problem: 32 (32%) had mild TMD, 4 (4%) had moderate TMD, and 6 (6%) had severe TMD problems. Conclusion: A simplified questionnaire by Fonseca allows identifying a TMD patient and, simultaneously, classifies the patient according to disorder severity. From this study, a mild-to-moderate prevalence of TMD appears to be evident among the dental students of Saveetha Dental College. The present study being a cross-sectional observation should be followed by a longitudinal study in the near future.
