Introduction: Examination and evaluation of the remains of the bone are of utmost importance in the identification of the deceased and also for the estimation of the morphological correlation such as the height in case of many medico-legal situations. Several studies have been conducted to estimate the height of the individual with the length of the sternum bone. In the present study, we correlated the length of the sternum bone with the height of the individual to estimate stature in living individuals. Materials and Methods: There are various methods to measure the length of the sternum in the forensic study, but this study deals with the living individuals. Measurements were taken while the subjects were in a relaxed standing posture. The length of the sternum was measured from the jugular notch to xiphoid process using a measuring tape. The total height was measured using a ruler. The results obtained were then compiled and evaluated and were put in a linear regression analysis and the results were then discussed and concluded. Results: The length of the sternum (including both manubrium and body) ranged from 16 to 24 cm with an average length of 19.2342 cm. The height of the subjects ranged from 158 to 186 cm with the average value of 171.2285 cm. The correlation coefficient “r” was found to be 0.9410, which indicates a linear correlation between the two values. Conclusion: It was found that the length of the sternum is a strong correlating factor to the stature of South Indian adolescent male population. The data analyzed may be useful for anthropologist and medico-legal experts for stature estimation in several conditions.
