Introduction: Periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent oral diseases worldwide. According to the WHO, about 60– 70% of populations having respiratory diseases due to periodontitis. Peak expiratory flow also called peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) is a person’s maximum rate and speed of expiration. The aim of this study is to evaluate the PEFR among periodontitis individuals. Materials and Methods: Patients were selected from the Outpatient Department of Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals and divided into two groups; each group consists of 20 individuals. Group I consists of normal healthy individuals and the other group consists of individuals with periodontal disease. Results: The results were obtained and used paired t-test for significance. The PEFRs are 420 ± 21.37 and 317 ± 21.05 in control and periodontitis individuals, respectively. P values for these criteria were <0.005. Conclusion: This study revealed that expiratory flow rate for periodontitis has lesser than normal individuals. Hence, by maintaining good oral health and hygiene will be helpful for reducing the incidence rate of respiratory diseases due to periodontitis.
