Abstract
Introduction:Streptococcus mutans is one of the most common bacteria that are present in the saliva. It is a Gram-positive cocci, non-motile, either aerobic or facultative anaerobic microorganism that plays a major role in initiation of dental caries as they can metabolize carbohydrates. Garlic (Allium sativum) is a herb known for its antimicrobial effects as it has inhibitory activity on various pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Its antibacterial activity depends on allicin produced by enzymatic activity of alliinase. Aim: This study was performed to analyze the antimicrobial effect of the crude extract of A. sativum - garlic (test group) against the S. mutans and compared the same with chlorhexidine (positive control group). Materials and Methods: The crude extract of garlic which was made into a paste was filled in the cavities made on the culture medium with strains of S. mutans and checked for the zone of inhibition. Zone of inhibition was also checked for chlorhexidine. Result:The crude extract of garlic showed a zone of inhibition against S. mutans but not as effective as chlorhexidine.
