Title: A study on the nephro protective effect of Caesalpinia bonducella on nicotine-induced rats

    Aim: The present study was aimed to assess the protective effect of Caesalpinia bonducella leaf extract on reactive oxygen species, antioxidant potential, and histopathological changes in nicotine-induced nephrotoxicity in male rats. Experimental design: Adult male Wistar rats were used and divided as Group I: Control; Group II: Nicotine-induced nephrotoxicity; Group III: Nephrotoxicity-induced rats treated with ethanolic extract of C. bonducella leaf (500 mg/kg body weight/day, orally for 30 days); and Group IV: Control rats treated with C. bonducella leaf ethanolic extract (500 mg/kg body weight/day, orally for 30 days). At the end of the treatment, control and experimental animals were subjected to reactive oxygen species (ROS) (H2 O2 , *OH, and lipid peroxidation [LPO]), antioxidant enzymes, liver/kidney function markers, electrolytes, and histopathological studies. Results: Nicotine-induced rats showed an increase in the levels of reactive oxygen species (*OH and H2 O2 ) and LPO with concomitant alterations in the renal tissues. Conversely enzymic and non-enzymic antioxidant levels were found to be decreased. However, an oral effective dose of C. bonducella leaf extract (500 mg/kg b.wt) increased the antioxidant enzymes and retrieved the altered levels of ROS and LPO as well as histopathological changes which were induced by nicotine. Conclusion: It is concluded from the present findings that C. bonducella leaf extract exhibits nephron protective role through the restoration of reactive oxygen species and histopathological changes as well as antioxidant enzymes in the kidney tissue of nicotine-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. Hence, C. bonducella leaf extract may be one of the therapeutic options for the treatment of nicotine-induced nephrotoxicity.
