Ultrasonography (USG) is a non-invasive, inexpensive, easy to use, relatively quick imaging modality when compared with other maxillofacial imaging modalities such as computed tomography, nuclear medicine, and magnetic resonance imaging. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound (ultrasound) waves to produce images of tissues. A gel known as the transducer is used to convert the electric signals to ultrasound waves, and after passing the target tissues, it is reflected back as electric signals and is being displayed in the required formats. The use of USG in maxillofacial region imaging has been explored much in recent years and found to be important in diagnosing intraosseous lesions of the jaw, solid, and cystic swellings of the head and neck region, space infections, etc. The development of high-resolution US and US elastography has stretched its uses in the diagnosis of temporomandibular joint disorders, carcinoma of the tongue, cervical lymph node metastasis, etc. Other than these, USG has also been used for guided fine-needle aspiration. It is considered very safe, even during pregnancy because it uses no X-rays. In the present scenario, even though USG is being used to diagnose multiple numbers of maxillofacial diseases, it does not have its share in maxillofacial imaging as a routine diagnostic tool. Studies show that this method is getting established in very smaller range. Hence, this review aims to emphasize the usefulness of USG in dentomaxillofacial region.
