Introduction: The purpose of this study is (1) to determine effectiveness of various topical anesthetics being used among dentists (2) to understand the adverse reactions to topical anesthesia. Delivery of dental care has always been a challenge due to the emotional trait-dental anxiety which is often noticed. Dental anxiety is multifactorial complex phenomenon which develops due to variable factors such as personality characteristics, cognitive level, peer influence, maternal anxiety, and past negative experiences. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study, using convenience sampling method, was conducted among the students and staffs of Saveetha Dental College. The questionnaire was prepared encompassing the type, procedural use, effectiveness, and adverse reactions to various topical anesthetics. The statistical analysis of the gathered data was carried out. Results: Demographic data showed that 55% were practitioners and 45% were undergraduate students. Of those responding, 10.1% never use topical agents. The primary aim of all practitioners is to be able to provide treatment to the patient in the least painful way possible. The most common procedures for which topical anesthetics are used include pre-injection of local anesthetic and palliative treatment of soft tissues. In the present survey, few practitioners reported any major complications and reactions from the local and topical anesthetics. Conclusion: From the above study, it is seen that the majority of dentists routinely use topical anesthetics. Lignocaine spray is the most widely used topical anesthetic. Many practitioners are interested in using a more effective topical anesthetic if proven to be safe and effective.
