  • Abstract

Piezosurgery is a new technique introduced by Professor Vercellotti in 1988. Piezoelectric surgery is a minimally invasive technique that reduces the risk of damage to soft tissues and important structures such as nerves, blood vessels, and the mucosa. It also lessens damage to the bone cells and permits good survival of osteocytes during harvesting of bone. Piezoelectric surgery was first used by oral and maxillofacial surgeons for osteotomies, but recently, the procedure finds its applications in other fields of medicine as well such as neurosurgery and orthopedics. In dentistry, piezoelectric surgery finds its application in the fields of implantology, periodontics and orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and in sinus augmentation procedures. Thus, this literature review aims at highlighting the advantages, applications, and method of using the technique efficiently.
