Title: Prevalence pattern of developmental anomalies of oral cavity in South Indian population - A hospital-based study

    Background: The presence of developmental oral lesions is relatively common reasons that patients visit dental clinics. It is important for every dentist to have knowledge of the type and prevalence of these lesions. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence pattern of developmental anomalies of oral cavity in South Indian population. Study Design: The study was based on clinical examination and panoramic radiograph of about 14,022 patients who visited outpatient clinic at Saveetha Dental College, Chennai, India, between May 2014 and July 2014. The prevalence pattern of developmental oral lesions was examined. Result: Among 14,022 subjects (8072 male and 5950 females), a total of 325 individuals had developmental anomalies. Of the total of 14,022 individuals, 278 (85%) exhibited at least one anomaly, 40 (12%) showed two anomalies, and 7 (2%) subjects displayed more than two anomalies. The developmental anomalies were found to be more in males than females in the survey.
