  • Abstract

Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders of the development of movement and posture, causing activity limitation that is attributed to non-progressive disturbances that occurred in the developing fetal or infant brain. The motor disorders are often accompanied by disturbances of sensation, cognition, communication, perception, and/or behavior, and/or by a seizure disorder. Worldwide, approximately 2.5 in 1000 live-born children suffer from cerebral palsy. Several studies have reported a greater prevalence of dental caries in children with cerebral palsy. Dental caries is highly prevalent in both children and adolescents with cerebral palsy and presents a negative impact on their quality of oral health. A large proportion of children with cerebral palsy suffer from mental retardation. As a result of these factors, there is an inability to maintain proper oral hygiene practices in children with cerebral palsy. Musculoskeletal impairments limit the capacity to perform tasks such as tooth brushing independently. In such children, tooth brushing depends on the knowledge and attitude, and actions of a caregiver are not received training. Awareness on the importance of oral health among these children and their families is vital for good oral health and hygiene.
