    Initially, stainless steel was the material of choice and manual instrumentation was the only means of cleaning the root canals. However, there is a tremendous change in the modern endodontics, due to the introduction of nickel–titanium (Ni–Ti) files and rotary instrumentation. Ni–Ti was developed 40 years ago in the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Silver Springs, Maryland. Therefore, the acronym nitinol is used worldwide for this unusual type of alloy with better flexibility and fracture resistance. Rotary systems that evolved over the years into different generations differ in the series of instruments included. The unexpected failure of Ni–Ti rotary instruments inside the root canal during root canal treatment is a matter of serious concern, as these instruments may fracture within their elastic limit without any visible sign of previous permanent deformation. Hence, to avoid procedural errors, the present article highlighted the information regarding available rotary systems for the ease of understanding.
