Introduction: Needlestick injury (NSI) constitutes as one of the most common occupational hazards among dental profession. Dental professional is at more higher risk due to their limited and restricted working area. A questionnaire-based study was carried out to determine the knowledge and awareness regarding NSI in dental students. Aim: This study aims to access the knowledge and awareness of NSI among dental students. Materials and Methods: A self-administered questionnaire with 15 questions was prepared and distributed among the 3rd and final year students. The questionnaire includes the basic questions on the knowledge and assessment of NSI and precautions and prevention on NSI. The data extracted were tabulated; data management and statistical analysis were performed; frequencies and percentages were calculated, and results obtained using SPSS. Results: A total of 100 undergraduate students participated in the study which involved 48 male and 52 female students. On an average, 60%of the students had reported that needle stick injury occurs during recapping. 63% of the respondents were no aware of the proper method of needle disposal. Most of the students were to have llesser awareness of needle stick injury and methods of its prevention. Conclusion: This study reveals that the knowledge and awareness of NSI among dental students is inadequate. A standard protocol as well as adapting prevention measures should be formulated in all dental colleges. As per the WHO recommendation elimination of needle recapping, the use of safety disposable method and use of needleless device should be implemented to reduce the risk of NSIs.
