Title: Caesalpinia bonducella facilitates antioxidant enzymes in the brain of nicotine-induced rats

    Aim: Antioxidant enzymes have been reported to have neuroprotective and neuroregenerative effects through reducing or reversing cellular damage and by reducing the progression of neuronal cell loss. The present study was designed to assess the effects of Caesalpinia bonducella leaf ethanolic extract on antioxidant enzymes in brain of nicotine-induced rats. Experimental Design: Adult male Wistar rats were used and divided into four groups. Group I: Control; Group II: Nicotine-induced rats; Group III: Nicotine-induced rats treated with C. bonducella leaf extract (500 mg/kg body weight/day, orally for 30 days); and Group IV: Control rats treated with C. bonducella (500 mg/kg body weight/day, orally for 30 days). At the end of the treatment, animals were subjected to antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione reductase (GR). Results: Nicotine-induced rats showed decrease in the levels of SOD, CAT, GPx, and GR. However, oral effective dose of C. bonducella leaf extract (500 mg/kg b.wt) for 30 days increased the antioxidant enzymes. Conclusion: It is concluded from the present findings that C. bonducella exhibit neuroprotective role through restoration antioxidant enzymes in the brain tissue of nicotine-induced rats. Hence, C. bonducella has neuroprotective role which can be used for the management of neurodegenerative diseases.
