    Introduction: The emergence and widespread dissemination of multidrug-resistant strains have become a serious public health concern. In this scenario, the development of novel antibacterial agents with minimal side effects has become the need of the hour. At present, there is a greater demand for phytopharmaceutical products of medicinal plant origin. The present study was designed to assess the antimicrobial activity of Ricinus communis Linn. (leaf) against drug-resistant bacterial isolates. Materials and Methods: Methanol, ethanol, acetone, and chloroform extracts of R. communis (leaf) were prepared by cold percolation method. Antibacterial activities of extracts were evaluated using agar well diffusion method against clinical isolates of Gram-positive cocci (Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative bacilli (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). The standard strains of ATCC 25922 E. coli, ATCC 25923 S. aureus, ATCC 27853 P. aeruginosa, and ATCC 29212 E. faecalis were used as controls. Minimum inhibitory concentration was determined by microbroth dilution method. Results: Methanol extract of R. communis exhibited better antibacterial activity compared to the other solvent extracts against both the standard strains (ATCC) and the drug-resistant clinical isolates. Phytochemical screening of the extracts revealed the presence of bioactive compounds that are known to exhibit antibacterial activity. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the methanolic extracts of R. communis L. (leaf) could be a promising herbal alternative in the therapeutic management of drug-resistant Gram-positive (methicillin-resistant S. aureus and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus) and Gram-negative (extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing E. coli and P. aeruginosa) bacterial infections
