Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions (OMLs) among tobacco users attending the outpatient department in a dental hospital in Chennai. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 300 subjects with the habit of tobacco attending the outpatient department of the dental college in Chennai city. A questionnaire was used to obtain the information on tobacco habits followed by oral clinical examination. Results: The prevalence of OMLs in patients with tobacco-related habits was found to be 43.7%. The study showed smoker’s melanosis (10%) to be the most frequently associated OMLs with tobacco use followed by leukoplakia (8.6%), oral submucous fibrosis (5.4%), lichenoid (2.3%), and malignancy (1.3%). Conclusions: This study gives information on the association of OMLs in smokers, chewers, and those with mixed habits. The study underpins the association between OMLs and adverse tobacco habits, which accentuates the need for creating awareness among the masses regarding the health hazards caused by this detrimental habit. Efforts should be taken to provide proper counseling, alternate measures, and pharmacological management as a step toward curbing this habit.
