  • Abstract

Smokeless tobacco or unburned tobacco refers to the use of tobacco products in a way other than smoking. The most common tobacco products include chewing tobacco, naswar, gutka, snus, snuff, and topical tobacco paste. This method of consumption of tobacco has been widely used over the past 10 years by different cultures of the world, as a safer alternative to smoking. However, studies show that the additive use of smokeless tobacco can also lead to oral leukoplakia, gingival recession and plays a contributory role in the development of cardiovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, and peptic ulcers. The most harmful compounds in smokeless tobacco are tobacco-specific nitrosamines and their levels are directly related to the risk of cancer. This review focuses on the health risks involved with the use of smokeless tobacco and also the compounds that could promote carcinogenesis in long-term smokeless tobacco users.
