Title: Antioxidant activity of catechol derivatives on buccal tumor cell line TR146 in vitro

    Aim: The aim of the present study was undertaken to evaluate the antioxidant effects of quinine against buccal tumor cell line. Results: TR146 as well as its effect on lipid peroxidation for 24 h. Results showed that the level of lipid peroxidation was significantly increased upon treatment with catechol derivatives I and II at different concentrations (1, 100, 250, 500, and 750 ng) when compared to untreated control TR146 cells. Among the catechol derivatives, catechol derivative I was found to be more effective than the catechol derivative II. The antioxidant enzyme - superoxide dismutase - was decreased significantly upon treatment with catechol derivatives I and II at the above-mentioned concentrations when compared to untreated control TR146 cells. Catechol derivative I showed better effect than the catechol derivative II. Conclusion: This may be due to the reason for positioning the functional group in their structures. The observed result confirms that catechol derivatives were found to possess antilipid peroxidation and antioxidant effect on cancer cells.
