    Chromium (Cr) and chromium containing compounds are highly toxic in nature. Cr is discharge in wastes of various industries like tannery and cause toxicity to human, animal and environment. Focus of this study was to isolate bacterial strains that show great potential towards Chromium (III) bioremoval. In this study, total seven Cr (III) tolerant bacterial strains (named AK1 to AK7) were isolated from the tannery effluent samples collected from Ranipet, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India. All strains were screened for its Cr (III) uptake potential and two efficient strains (AK2 and AK7) were adapted to higher concentration of Cr (III) for effective bioremoval of Cr (III). Effective strains were characterized morphologically and biochemically as Bacillus sp. This study also reports the maximum tolerance concentration (MTC) of the effective strains towards chromium, salt (NaCl) and other heavy metals. Antibiogram of the effective strains was also performed.
