Background: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic, progressive, and irreversible disease that severely affects the oral, oropharyngeal, and the esophageal mucous. Lycopene, a red-colored carotenoid, prevents the promotion of carcinogenesis by interfering with various cellular processes and inhibiting proliferation of several types of cancer cells. It is also an effective antioxidant from tomato extract, which has been proved to be the most potent radical scavenger in various in vivo as well as in vitro studies. Quercetin, A flavonoid found in fruits and vegetables, has unique biological properties. The aim of the study was to compare and evaluate the efficacy of lycopene and quercetin on OSMF celllines. Materials and Methods: Cytotoxicity potential of Quercetin and Lycopene was compared and analysed on OSMF cell lines. Results and Discussion: Both Quercetin and Lycopene exhibited cytotoxicity against OSMF cell lines. From the results it was evident that lycopene was more efficient compared to Quercetin.
