Objective: The objective of this study was to calculate the metabolic syndrome prevalence in diabetic patients in a tertiary care hospital. Subjects and Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted in the General Medicine Department of Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (Deemed to be University), Porur, Chennai - 600116, India. From August 2017 to April 2018, we enrolled 129 diabetic subjects. Newly modified International Diabetes Federation (IDF) diagnostic criteria are applied to gauge the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Results: Among 129 patients with diabetes mellitus, in whom 58% and 42% were women and men, respectively. Average age of the survey population was found to be 45.64 years. By applying new IDF criteria, metabolic syndrome was identified in 65.11% diabetics (42.6% of women and 22.4% of men). Conclusion: In our study, the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome was found significantly higher, especially in women and waist circumference is one of the main risk factors for developing metabolic syndrome. Clinical pharmacist interventions on patients drug profile, patient counseling, and lifestyle modifications play a major role in the significant reduction of metabolic syndrome.
