    Plants have evolved a number of inducible defence mechanisms against pathogen attack. Acorus calamus known as Vach in Hindi has also been credited with many medicinal properties. An antimicrobial substance ß-asarone was isolated from the methanolic extract of Acorus calamus leaves using various chromatographic procedures. The antibiotic was identified as ß-asarone on the basis of the FTIR, 1H- NMR, and FAB Mass spectral data. Antimicrobial activity of Acorus calamus rhizomes was evaluated in vitro. Different concentrations of ß–asarone isolated from methanolic extract (20-100 μg/ml) were tested and the antimicrobial activity was observed from 40 μg/ml and the zone of inhibition increased with concentration. ß –asarone inhibited growth of bacteria E. coli in a range of 40-100 μg/ml. The growth of fungi A. niger was slightly suppressed by ß-asarone in a range of 80-100 μg/ml. This is the first study to demonstrate in vitro antifungal activity of ßasarone against micro-organisms Escherichia coli and Aspergillus niger.
