Title: Neuroprotective effect of cranberry extract on chronic noise stress-induced changes in rat hippocampus

    Background: Noise is considered as an environmental stressor which exerts negative effects on the body when it exceeds 100 dB, including behavioral, neuroendocrine, and memory loss. Exposure to chronic noise stress leads to oxidative stress and behavior, biochemical, and structural alteration of neuron. Objective: In this study, to investigate the protective effect of cranberry ethanolic extract (CBE) on hippocampus of rats exposed to chronic noise stress. Materials and Methods: A total of eight groups rats were used in this study, Groups 1 and 2 used as control rats, in Groups 3 and 4 rats were exposed to noise 100 dBA/4h/d for 30 and 60 days. Group 5 and 6 rats treated with CBE per oral 250 and 500 mg/kg/bw plus 30 days noise stress. Group 7 and 8 rats treated with CBE per oral 250 and 500 mg/kg/bw plus 60 days noise stress. The effect of cranberry extract was assessed by oxidative status, histological changes, and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) expression in hippocampus. Results: The results of the present study showed that both chronic stress groups significantly reduction in the antioxidants and its enzymes, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, protein thiols, and reduced glutathione and concomitantly increased lipid peroxidation and superoxide dismutase which is prevented significantly by 500 mg/kg CBE treatment. Furthermore, CBE supplementation effectively improvises histological alterations and 4-HNE expression in stressed rats hippocampus. Conclusions: CBE effectively prevents neurons in rats hippocampus on chronic noise stress-induced oxidative damage due to its antioxidant property.
