    In the present work, hydroxyapatite (HAp) was successfully synthesized by two different sol-gel synthesis methods using dried dead snail shells, aspecial type of biological wastes, (NH4)2HPO4, and NH4OH as starting materials. The gelatinous precipitate was washed repeatedly with distilled water to remove unwanted ions and dried overnight in an oven at 100 o C and then calcined at 8000C for 2 hour. The powder sample was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Malvern Particle Size Analyzer, X-ray Diffractometer (PW-1830, Philips, Netherlands) using Cu-Ka radiation. FTIR spectra with a Perkin-Elmer (S2000) IR spectrometer, thermogravimetric analysis by (NETZSCH-Geratebau GmbH Thermal Analyzer) BET surface area analyzer (QUANTACHROME Model: Autosorb1). The snail shells seems to be a promising source of calcium for preparing nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite with excellent properties so essential for hard tissue replacement.
