Title: Survey on orthodontic retention appliances used by general dental practitioners in Chennai city – A pilot survey

    Aim: The aim of this study was to take a survey on retention practices commonly employed by general dentists. Materials and Methods: A structured questionnaire was given out to 50 randomly selected dentists in Chennai city and their responses were recorded manually. The questionnaire had questions regarding the most commonly used appliance, least commonly used appliance and the duration of the wear advised by the dentist. Results: Overall response was given by 50 general dentists. The most commonly used retention appliance combination employed by them was upper Hawley’s appliance and lower bonded retainer (n = 23), followed by upper and lower Hawley’s appliance (n = 17), upper and lower bonded (n = 6), upper and lower Begg’s wraparound retainer (n = 2), and upper and lower vacuum formed retainer (n = 2). Moreover, the most common protocol followed for upper and lower Hawley’s appliance for full-time wear for 6 months followed by part-time wear for the next 6 months. Conclusion: A combination of upper Hawley’s and lower bonded retainer continues to be the most commonly employed retention practice for majority of dentists in Chennai city.
