Abstract
Background:Dentistry as a profession is not only mentally and physically demanding but also requires the practitioner to be on their toes always with no scope of errors. In the present times, the patients are becoming more educated, scrutinizing, and aware of their legal rights. Legal jurisdictions and threats to be sued not only hamper professional growth but also the practitioner’s dignity. It is, therefore, essential that dental practitioners are aware of their legal rights and responsibilities. Materials and Methods:A pre-tested questionnaire will be distributed to 100 dental practitioners in Chennai. The level of knowledge regarding various aspects of medicolegal issues in dentistry was recorded. Results:Almost all participants were aware of informed consent forms and about the Consumer Protection Act, in general, but not specific legal details. Around 90% did not have an indemnity policy and those who had, had it for <20 lakhs mostly. The participants suggested the need for increased civil defense education programs to improve their medicolegal knowledge. Conclusion:The purpose of this survey is to highlight the status of awareness and knowledge of medicolegal aspects of dentistry among dental practitioners.
