Abstract
Objectives:The objectives of the study were to evaluate the cytotoxic activity of Alstonia scholaris (Bark) against human breast cancer cell line Michigan Cancer Foundation-7 (MCF-7) using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Materials and Methods:The bark part of A. scholaris was subjected to Soxhlet extraction using hexane, ethyl acetate, ethanol, and aqueous solvents based on their polarity. The crude extracts obtained were subjected to preliminary phytochemical analysis and tested for cytotoxicity activity against human breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) using MTT assay. Results:Phytochemical screening of different extracts, i.e., hexane, ethyl acetate, ethanol, and aqueous extracts of A. scholaris revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, steroids, cardiac glycosides, etc., as major components. The cytotoxic activity of four different extracts was studied using MCF 7 cell line. The ethanol extract of A. scholaris showed significant cytotoxic effect when compared to other extracts. Conclusion:The results obtained indicated that the ethanol extract of A. scholaris has excellent cytotoxic activity, and further studies will be performed to isolate the novel compounds for chemotherapeutic use.
