An ant (Formicidae) being a eusocial insect has been recently studied, and it is found that an ant venom has shown pharmacological activity. Some species of ants such as fire ant venom possess antibacterial activity and have shown to be effective in the treatment of psoriasis, while Dinoponera quadriceps have shown antibacterial (Trypanosoma cruzi) activity. According to Chinese history, it has been found that Chinese have been using Chinese ant (dry powder) in the treatment of arthritis. Based on the research by Chinese researchers has found an ant (Polyrhachis lamellidens) powder possesses polyrhacitides A (1) and B (2), which is effective in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis as well as hepatitis due to its anti- inflammatory property. An Australian jumper ant (Myrmecia pilosula) has shown, fire ant, Chinese ant (P. lamellidens) anticancerous. Similarly, an alkaloid called solenopsin – A and B derived from the fire ant venom, which is effective against some species of bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli and also in treating psoriasis (an autoimmune disorder).
