Aim: Peptic ulcer disease is a common global health problem today. A number of synthetic drugs are now available for treatment but there are incidence of relapses, adverse effects and danger of drug interactions during ulcer therapy. Hence the search for an ideal anti-ulcer drug continues. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the anti-ulcer activity of detoxified pericarp extract of Anamirta cocculus (Linn) fruit. Methods: The detoxified pericarp extract of Anamirta cocculus (Linn.) fruit was investigated for its anti-ulcer activity against pylorus ligation induced gastric ulcer in rats and HCl -Ethanol induced ulcer in rats at 200 mg/kg body weight. p.o. Results: A significant (P < 0.001) anti-ulcer activity was observed in all the models. Pylorus ligation showed significant (P< 0.01) reduction in gastric volume, gastric acidity as compared to control. It also showed 34.16% ulcer inhibition in preventive treatment against HCl- Ethanol induced gastric mucosal damage and 54.49% ulcer inhibition in curative treatment against HCl- Ethanol induced gastric mucosal damage. Conclusion: Present study indicates that detoxified pericarp extract of Anamirta cocculus (Linn.) fruit have potential anti-ulcer activity in the models tested and increased resistance to necrotizing agents, providing a direct protective effect on the gastric mucosa and exhibited anti-ulcer effect.
