A series of new N-(2,5-dimethylphenyl)-7-methyl/7-methyl -3-oxo-5-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-5H-[1,3]thiazolo[3,2-a] pyrimidine-6-carboxamide have been synthesized by a three component (MCR) reaction involving N-(2,5-dimethylphenyl)-3-oxobutanamide,thioura and substituted benzaldehyde gives N-(2,5- dimethylphenyl)-6-methyl-4-phenyl-2-sulfanyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro pyrimidine-5-carboxamide which on reaction with dibromoethane /chloro acetylchloride respectively. The newly synthesized compounds were well characterized by elemental analysis, IR, 1H NMR and mass spectral studies. The newly synthesized compounds were screened for their antibacterial and antifungal activities and have exhibited moderate to excellent growth inhibition of bacteria and fungi. The results of such studies have been discussed in this paper.

Title: Effect of ß-carotene from Chlorococcum humicola on biomarker enzymes, Lipid peroxidation and Antioxidants in B(a)P induced lung cancer

Chlorococcum humicola, fresh water green algae accumulated high amounts of carotenoids with 50-60% of ß-carotene. ß-carotene inhibits tumour growth and suppresses benzo(a)pyrene induced lung cancer. Cancer induction was confirmed with marker enzymes (Gamma Glutamyl transpeptidase, 5’-Nucleotidase, Lactate dehydrogenase, and Adenosine deaminase). At various period of time interval, the biomarkers were assessed which shows the significant alteration on ß-carotene treatment. The levels of lipidperoxidation, enzymic antioxidants (Catalase, Super Oxide Dismutase, and Glutathione Peroxidase) and non-enzymic antioxidants (Reduced Glutathione, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E) showed significant alterations compared with the control mice. The minimal lipid peroxidation and significant improvement of antioxidant status was found in the ß-carotene fed animals. The findings from overall data demonstrates that the animals post treated with ß-carotene from green algae C. humicola may prevent lung cancer and hence aid in establishing the chemopreventive effect when administered orally on lung cancer bearing mice.
