An attempt was made to characterize the pathogens and their antibiotic susceptibilities in patients with catheter associated urinary tract infection in order to optimize empirical antibiotics therapy and prophylaxis. About 3635 patients with an indwelling catheter from a tertiary level hospital, Kerala was examined for a period of one year.. Antibiotic susceptibility of 325 bacterial isolates was performed using Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI) Kirbey Bauer method. Two hundred and twenty two isolates were conformed to cause symptomatic bacteruria while 10 isolates were found to be of asymptomatic bacteruria. E coli was the most frequently isolated pathogen followed by Pseudomonas and Klebsiella. E coli had higher susceptibility towards Chloramphenicol and then to aminoglycosides followed by Moxifloxacin, while Pseudomonas is highly susceptible to chloramphenicol Followed by aztreonam followed by aminoglycoseds and ceftazidime. Klebsiella showed high susceptibility to aminoglycosides followed by chloramphenicol followed by cotrimoxazole and doxycycline.
