Abstract
Aim: This study aims to assess the perception of facial asymmetry in Indian origin Malaysians with pleasing facial appearance among dental students. Materials and Methods:A total of 25 frontal photographs of Indian origin Malaysian students in Saveetha Dental College were taken using digital single lens reflex camera with negligible variation in distance between the lens and the object. The right and the left halves of the face of all participants were cropped separately. Each half was flipped and joined with the unflipped half of the same side using Adobe Photoshop 7.0 (Adobe Systems, San Jose, California), and two composite photographs were created for every individual. When the right side and left side composite photographs of the same individual were compared, they looked unequal. Undergraduate dental students were shown the right and left side composite photographs and their perception of facial asymmetry was assessed using a questionnaire. Results:The undergraduate dental students’ response was that there is significant facial asymmetry between the right and left sides of people with pleasing facial profile. Conclusion:Even in people with pleasing esthetic profile, there could be subclinical asymmetry which may go unnoticed often as it does not affect the social life of the individual.
