Abstract
Background: Stress is an unavoidable phenomenon which disturbs physiological homeostasis. Stressors can have multiple effects on individuals depending on the nature of the stressors. Noise stress is an environmental stress factor, and acute as well chronic noise stress induces oxidative stress. The brain is more vulnerable to the effects of stress, affecting cognitive functions and behavior. The ethanolic extracts of Nelumbo nucifera (NNE) seedpod and its active component Quercetin (QRCT) were investigated for its protective role in ameliorating the changes induced by noise stress exposure. Materials and Methods: Adult male Wistar strain albino rats, weighing between 180 and 220 g, were used and divided into 12 groups. Animals were given drugs NNE (400 mg/kg body weight [bw]) and its active principle quercetin (40 mg/kg bw) through oral administration in different concentration 10 days before noise stress exposure. Neuroprotective role of NN seedpod and quercetin on hippocampus and medial prefrontal cortex was assessed by open field apparatus. Results:The stress group animal showed increased corticosterone levels, decreased movements, and increased immobilization time due to anxiety. However, the drug-treated animals had increased exploratory activity by moving freely with less immobilization. Among the drug groups, the active component quercetin group showed more effective anxiolytic activity than crude extract of seedpod. Conclusion:The findings of the present study showed that both the NNE and quercetin groups were effective in ameliorating the noise stress-induced changes, but the active component quercetin group had a higher protective impact on the changes.
