Abstract

To report a case of synchronous cancer of the head and neck region seen in our facility and identification of high-risk factors for the development of synchronous primary in the head and neck cancers. Patients with cancers in the head and neck region are at increased risk of developing synchronous primary cancers. Synchronous cancers are defined as the occurrence of a second primary cancer within the first 6 months following the detection of the first cancer, whereas metachronous cancers appear after 6 months following identification of a primary lesion. A 55-year-old male patient reported to the Oral Cancer Institute with an ulceroproliferative lesion of the left lateral border of the tongue. Incisional biopsy performed revealed moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma with advanced OSMF. The patient underwent wide local excision + MRND with radial forearm free flap under general anesthesia. Post-operative histopathology revealed clear margins and lymph nodes negative. The patient reported back to the institute after 2 months and presented with an ulceroproliferative lesion in the left maxillary alveolus. Incisional biopsy revealed the lesion as moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. This report describes our experience with a case of synchronous squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity. Synchronous and metachronous tumors are an increasingly common clinical situation. The clinician should always keep in mind the possibility of the occurrence of multiple primitive cancers. A rigorous assessment of the disease and a regular follow-up of the patient are mandatory to detect in time, a second localization.
