The oral cavity is affected by various viral disease manifestations, and it is frequently encountered with viral infections. Clinical diagnosis of these manifestations is important and may be confusing due to their similar presentation. Members of the human herpesvirus and human papillomavirus families cause the most common primary viral infections of the oral cavity. Human papillomavirus infections have received particular attention in recent years, as high-risk strains have been linked to some cases of oral cancer. Many other viruses can also affect the oral cavity; they can either occur as systemic or localized manifestations. Different viruses and their oral manifestations are discussed below.
