  • Abstract

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is also known as polycystic ovarian disease. PCOS has increased recently with the realization that this syndrome involves far more than the reproductive system. PCOS is often a term that is used to describe a complex of symptoms that is characterized by irregular menstrual periods, mild androgen excess (or too much of the male- like hormones), and the presence of a number of small cysts (or follicles) within the ovary. It is the most common female endocrine disorder with its prevalence increasing each and every year. It also has an uncertain etiology, and it is a serious threat that woman having PCOS will have irregular menstrual cycle and they have difficulties in even getting pregnant. Some studies have also shown women with PCOS to be at higher risk for suicide due to lower self-esteem as well as prone to endometrial, ovarian, and breast cancer. PCOS affects the quality of life and can worsen anxiety and depression either due to the features of PCOS or due to the diagnosis of a chronic illness. Moreover, its prevention is impossible; however, we can reduce the risk of this disease by having an active lifestyle and by consuming proper and nutritious diet.
