    Purpose: The purpose of the study was to design and prepare effervescent floating gastroretentive tablets for sustained risedronate sodium (RS) release and enhance oral bioavailability. Materials and Methods: Various tablet formulations of the RS were prepared by direct compression method. A systematic approach in the design of the formulations was adopted, where using sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (SCMC) and guar gum in various concentrations along with sodium bicarbonate were investigated for its physicochemical properties (in vitro floating behavior, drug release profile, etc.). Subsequently, a final optimization step involved based on the physicochemical properties to achieve the desired effect. The formulations were evaluated in vitro and in vivo X-ray study in albino rabbits. Results: The formulation consisting of sodium SCMC/guar gum (F7) showed good floating properties (45 S floating lag time) with nearly zero-order controlled drug release for 12 h (R2 = 0.9641). In vivo X-ray studies of F7 in albino rabbits showed a good floating ability up to 8 h study compared to a commercial conventional product. Conclusion: The good quality of the effervescent gastroretentive tablets of RS developed is an indication that the approach used is suitable for the formulation of the drug to sustained drug release and enhanced oral bioavailability.
