Background: Although there are many retaining mechanisms available for retaining the overdentures, the choice of one system over the other should be based on a complete understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of each system. Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the knowledge of dental students about retaining mechanisms for implant-retained overdentures. Methodology: A self-administered questionnaire with 10 questions was prepared and circulated among 100 dental interns. Data collection and analysis were done based on frequencies and percentage values. Results: In case of retention and support, 81% of students agreed that a ball and socket retainer can provide both retention and support and 9% of them do not agree and 10% of students were not confident. About 62% of students suggested that a bar and clip retainer can give both support and retention and 17% did not and 21% of students were not confident. Conclusion: The survey shows that the participants are a little above average in their knowledge of retaining mechanisms. However, a regular and continuous assessment at the individual and group levels can lead to better understanding and choice of retaining mechanisms.
