Background: A dental impression is a negative imprint of hard and soft tissues in the oral cavity and a crucial step in complete denture treatment. Common materials used for dental impressions are sodium alginate, polyether, and silicones both condensation cured silicones and addition cured silicones. However, the level of awareness and knowledge of materials used for making a secondary impression for complete denture among dental practitioners (DP) and students needs to be investigated further. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the awareness and knowledge among dental students (DS) and DP about the materials used in making secondary impressions for complete denture. Materials and Methods: A survey was conducted among the DP and DS in Chennai to assess the knowledge, attitude, and awareness on oral hygiene using a pretested questionnaire. A sample size of 100 participants inclusive of 50 DP and 50 DS each were used. Questions based on the dental knowledge and attitude toward the secondary impression materials for complete dentures were asked to the participants. The questionnaire consisted of ten questions and appropriate responses were recorded. Results: Among the respondents, 58% of DS follow mucocompressive technique for making a secondary impression and more than 72% of DP follow mucocompressive technique for making a secondary impression. Among the respondents more than 72% of DS responded that light-bodied addition silicone impression material may be suitable for secondary impressions, and 60% of DP responded that light-bodied addition silicone impression material may be suitable for secondary impressions. Conclusion: Knowledge and awareness among DS were better about the materials used in making secondary impression for complete denture. However, responses of both the students and practitioners showed that they have to make continuous efforts to learn more about newer materials to render improved care to patients.
