Abstract
Poultry products are proven to be the single, cheapest, and highest source of all proteins and nutrients required by people of all ages. However, there is a misconception that the consumption of poultry and related products also leads to the early onset of puberty among growing female children resulting in physical and emotional problems in their lives. Empirical studies place the mean age of puberty attainment by girls at 8–13. The present study is to prove or disprove this misconception. A cross-sectional study was conducted among a sample size of 2446 female adolescents in Tamil Nadu using a comprehensive questionnaire to elicit their normal food habits, including poultry products, to seek a truthful response to evaluate their age of puberty attainment. This study uses logistic regression to identify the parameters and combination of parameters that lead to early puberty in girls. The critical combinations that lead to early puberty include (i) family disease history + BMI + family puberty history and (ii) non-vegetarian eating habits + meat eating + red meat- eating habits. The combination that does not lead to early puberty is (i) egg eating + chicken eating. The analysis revealed that the non-food or non-physical factors than food habits had a more dominant role in determining the puberty attainment among such adolescent females.
