Title: Effect of diosmin on oxidative stress markers in diethylnitrosamine-induced hepatocellular carcinoma in experimental rats

    Background: Diosmin is a well-known flavonoid having a broad spectrum of biological activities, including antioxidant, modulator of capillary permeability, and anti-carcinogenic widely used in medicine. Aim: The present study was aimed at assessing the effect of diosmin on enzymic antioxidant enzymes in diethylnitrosamine-induced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in experimental rats. Methodology: Rats were classified into four groups as follows: Group I: Control, Group II: N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA)-induced hepatocellular carcinogenic rats, Group III: Cancer-bearing animals treated with diosmin (200 mg/kg/body weight/day) orally for 28 days, and Group IV: Control animals treated with diosmin (200 mg/kg/ body weight/day) alone for 28 days. Oxidative stress markers such as lipid peroxidation (LPO), H2 O2, and OH* were studied. Results: The NDEA-induced HCC rats showed a significant (P < 0.05) increase in the activity of oxidative stress markers (LPO, H2 O2 , and OH*). The oral administration of diosmin significantly reduced (P < 0.05) these enzymes. Conclusion: It is concluded from the present findings that diosmin can be a therapeutic option in HCC.
